Whether you’re growing in a pot on the windowsill or have a tent full of microgreens, FruxePi is an easy project to monitor, automate and tweak your growing space.

Here's what you will need to quickly get started:


Raspberry Pi

The brain of the application is the Raspberry Pi, a series of small, affordable computers which cost less than $40 and have tons of potential for development.

We will use this mighty machine to connect several peripherals and automate various growing tasks based on time of day or exceeding environment thresholds. All of these functions and controls are delivered via a webserver running on the Raspberry Pi and accessible from your mobile or desktop browser.

Climate Sensor

Climate is key to ensure optimum production. This low cost DHT22 digital sensor measures the growing environment's temperature and humidity.

The climate sensor easily connects to the Raspberry Pi's GPIO and will transmit real-time temperature and humidity data back to the FruxePi. As several functions and features rely on climate data to work effectively, this is the only component which is mandatory for the FruxePi app's operation.

Relay Modules

Using miniature 5V Relay Modules are a great way to control high current and high voltage devices directly from the Raspberry Pi.

The FruxePi uses a 5V 3-channel relay to control the lights, fans and water pump, which are connected to their respective AC power plug. A power strip controlled by the Raspberry Pi is a common project found online and many tutorials are available which can offer guidance on how to wire a relay power outlet appropriately.

Moisture Sensor

The TE215 moisture probe is sensitive to ambient humidity and is used to detect the moisture content of the soil or growing medium.

Easily connected to the Raspberry Pi GPIO, the moisture probe outputs a HIGH or LOW value when the the soil humidity exceeds a set threshold value. Allowing you to easily determine if your plants need watering or the soil is oversaturated.

Keep a watchful eye on your crops using the Raspberry Pi Camera Module.

The Raspberry Pi Camera v2 has a high quality 8 megapixel image sensor capable of 3280 x 2464 pixel static images. The small form factor and flexible ribbon cable allow you to poistion this camera anywhere in your grow room.
